Venture Building Platform
Redesign Onboarding Experience and
Role - switching Ux Flow
Rescale Lab is a platform for startup building and provides program managers the essential tools to design, manage and scale venture creation programs. The platform lets users manage everything related to startup (including team analytics, AI-recommended resources, network expansion, and program management, etc. ) in one place but was lacking an effortless user experience.
As a product designer, it was my role to work alongside the team to significantly improve the user experience of the product within six weeks.
There are four different roles (including Startup, Investor, Mentor, and Venture Lab) in this system and each user might have more than one role regarding various programs they attend. The platform provides many tools, but the exhaustive onboarding experience makes users confusing and has no idea where and how to start. The community manager told us that they usually have to teach them in person how to use it for the first time.
THE PREVIOUS DESIGN:
We were asked to redesign the whole onboarding experience and the flow of guiding each role to use each feature. In the original design, the landing page after signup is the community page where all users can share ideas. Users have difficulties reaching their own page or feature they want after signup and have to go to the profile page to create roles, but the role switching is on the navigation bar. The whole process is confusing and the actions are not coherent.
We went through the process of creating roles and analyze them step by step through an interaction map, trying to figure out the difficulties that users face during the process.
Signup flow is too complicated and takes too much effort
Exhausting Onboarding experience
Users don’t understand how to use the platform and reach the feature which they want
Users feel confused about how to create and switch the different roles
There is no similar platform like Rescale Lab. We collect some different functions and websites as references, including account-changing, workplace platforms and dashboards.
HOW TO SOLVE IT?
Exhausting Onboarding Experience
Less Required Actions
Stepper For Introduction
Login&Invited Code - Create the roles - Switch the roles - Account - Notification - Community
Since the platform contains lots of functionalities and contents, we try to make the style remain clean and simple to reduce destruction.
Simple Onboarding Experience
We make the required form less and use steppers to have simple instructions before users enter the landing page.
Intuitive UI & Consistant Actions
We make all the functions and widgets stay in sidebar.
The functionalities change while users change the role.
Role-switching dropdown and community button are always on the navigation which can be easily accessed
Create A Role
Users have to go to the profile page, click toggle and add the new entity
Users can click the "create new" button on the side bar
Switch The Role
After adding a new entity, users use the button on the navigation to switch the role.
Users use the dropdown to switch the role
There are no widgets when users first enter the role page and users have no idea how to start.
The functionalities on the sidebar will change as the role change. A set of the fundamental widgets is the default and users can add new ones.
The original landing page is the community page and users have difficulties adding roles.
We use the profile page as landing page where users can easily edit their information first. The "Community" page can still be easily accessed.
